Bernadette Duran-Brown and Steve Silva spoke during Eminent Domain and Land Valuation Litigation 2023 hosted by American Law Institute Continuing Legal Education (ALI CLE) February 2-4, 2023 in Austin, TX. The conference benefited land use, zoning or real estate lawyers, particularly those who may be involved in an eminent domain dispute; appraisers; property valuation consultants; constitutional law enthusiasts; and municipal/local government lawyers.

During “When the SWAT Team Comes (No) Knocking: Police Power Takings” at 9:00 a.m. CT on February 3rd, Steve’s panel discussed the history and policy issues concerning takings claims that arise from police activity—especially where property is damaged or destroyed during a police operation. The panel then examined cases which addressed the issues and the implications those cases have for eminent domain/takings jurisprudence.

Bernadette spoke during “Preparing Your Expert Witness to Shine in Virtual Proceedings: Tools and Tips for Trial Lawyers” on February 3rd at 1:15 p.m. CT. The panel discussed best practices for virtual proceedings, which are becoming a mainstay in the modern legal world. The panelists gave do’s and don’ts related to virtual depositions, hearings, arbitrations and trial and demonstrated various technology to help witnesses and attorneys shine online.
