A Long Time Coming — A Discussion with Lloyd Dean
On February 28, 2023, Nossaman’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee hosted a webinar to celebrate Black History Month with Lloyd Dean, a nationally recognized leader within health care. Lloyd discussed his reflections on diversity, equity and inclusion in various professions (medicine and law, in particular), as well as the challenges in making access to high quality healthcare more equitable as seen through his viewpoint as a seasoned executive, board member of Fortune 500 companies and father.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER
Having come of age during the Civil Rights era from humble beginnings in Michigan, Lloyd Dean’s journey has taken him to the highest ranks of the healthcare industry in the U.S. and abroad. He is a fixture in Modern Healthcare’s “100 Most Influential People in Health Care” and on its list of “Top 25 Minority Leaders.” After 42 years in healthcare, Lloyd recently stepped down from the helm of CommonSpirit Health, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit healthcare systems across 21 states, with $34 billion in revenue, 150,000 employees and 25,000 physicians.
Lloyd counseled and served four of the last Presidential Administrations and was instrumental in the creation of the Affordable Care Act (the ACA). We will spend time discussing how the issue of access to care for diverse communities drove the negotiation and passage of the ACA. Lloyd also collaborated with nationwide health systems to partner with the Trump Administration and Biden Administration to promote and implement COVID-19 vaccinations.
