Nossaman Partner Patrick Richard Featured In Sacramento Business Journal For $2 Million Client Win
Nossaman Partner Patrick Richard was quoted in the Sacramento Business Journal story Civil Judgment Calls for Ethan Conrad To Pay $2 Million In Damages. The story recounts the Sacramento Superior Court jury’s verdict that awarded Mr. Richard’s client—Gloria Orozco—more than $2 million in civil damages after it found Mr. Conrad overly aggressive in evicting her from the strip-mall space she was renting for her restaurant. The jury found that Mr. Conrad defrauded Ms. Orozco and did not have the right to take possession of fixtures from Ms. Orozco’s restaurant. The jury also found –unanimously—that Mr. Conrad trespassed and inflicted emotional distress on Ms. Orozco during the eviction process in March of 2015. Mr. Richard commented that the jury’s verdict demonstrated that there is a downside to business owners who treat people badly. For juries it’s a rare thing to see what power looks like, he stated. I think the jury wanted to know that their verdict mattered. Jill Jaffe, an associate in Nossaman’s San Francisco office, also represented Ms. Orozco at trial.
