Endorsements: A smart safety net for city schools in Davis

Nossaman Senior Policy Advisor Richard Harris, who is a member of the Davis, California school board, was mentioned in the Sacramento Bee editorial "Endorsements: A smart safety net for city schools in Davis."  The editorial piece endorses Measure E, an initiative which Mr. Harris conceived and helped place on the Nov. 6 ballot.  As the piece stated, "Davis school board member Richard Harris proposed a truly smart idea and got other board members to embrace it."

If Proposition 30, the initiative that Gov. Jerry Brown is promoting to raise $6 billion a year in taxes, fails, resulting in more than $5 billion in cuts from public schools, Measure E would extend Davis schools' existing parcel tax of $204 and would impose an additional $242 parcel tax on Davis residents if Prop 30 fails, producing $3.7 million total – the same amount the Davis schools stand to lose.  As the editorial notes, "Harris doesn't want Davis schools to suffer because of the whims of voters in the rest of the state."
