Supreme Court Strikes Ban on Navy's Use of Sonar in the Pacific

11/13/2008 Daily Journal

Paul Weiland, Nossaman partner and Chair of the firm's Land Use practice group, is quoted in the Daily Journal article, "Supreme Court Strikes Ban on Navy's Use of Sonar in the Pacific." The Supreme Court ruled to lighten restrictions on the Navy's use of sonar in training off the coast of Southern California, despite its potential threat to whales and other sea life. Because of this ruling, environmental groups will likely have a harder time getting preliminary injunction for similar cases. In the article, Mr. Weiland states that "the case can proceed, but what the environmental groups expect will change. There's a better shot now than there was yesterday that the federal government can push back on what's required of them."
