Nossaman Public Policy Partner Kate Belinski Quoted In Voice of America

07/07/2017 Voice of America

Kate Belinski, a partner in Nossaman’s Public Policy Practice Group, was quoted in the Voice of America story “DC, Maryland File ‘Emoluments’ Lawsuit Against Trump” and appeared on a Voice of America news broadcast segment.  The article and broadcast examined the lawsuits that the state of Maryland and the District of Columbia have filed  against Donald Trump, claiming the president’s sprawling business empire violates a part of the US Constitution meant to curb corruption. In the story, Ms. Belinski commented on an element of the emoluments clause that specifies the president cannot receive any payment for services other than as president. Asked about foreign officials staying in Trump-branded properties, she stated  “There may not be anything illegal about foreign dignitaries staying at those properties, but just that he’s receiving additional compensation from those stays could potentially be a violation of the emoluments clause…This is really uncharted territory with this emoluments clause. It will be interesting to see how it plays out, will be interesting to see how the courts grapple with it, and at the end of the day it will be interesting to see how the Supreme Court decides.”
