Corporate Partner Marco Costales Quoted By Associated Press

10/28/2018 AP News

Marco Costales, a Partner in Nossaman’s Corporate Practice Group, was quoted in the Associated Press article, “Businesses Pose Issue If Newsom Becomes California Governor.”  The article provides an overview of the possible issues Mr. Newsom could face in office due to his ownership holdings in wineries, bars, restaurants, hotels, and liquor stores.

One of the ethical issues the article discusses is that as governor, Mr. Newsom would appoint the director of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, which grants liquor licenses and can revoke them or fine business owners for violations like selling to underage drinkers or people who are overly intoxicated.  Commenting on the topic, Mr. Costales said that California “state law prohibits law-enforcement officers and state alcohol enforcers from owning liquor licenses but has no restrictions for the governor.”
