Nossaman Growth Strategy Yields 3 New Associates

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 26, 2012) Nossaman LLP demonstrated its commitment to strategic growth in the second half of 2011 and first weeks of 2012, bringing on 3 new lateral associates in offices and practice areas throughout the Firm.  Among the practices enhanced by these hires are Litigation, Infrastructure, Corporate, Financial Services, Eminent Domain, and Public Policy.

"These are all very talented young attorneys who add depth to our team and allow us to expand the services we offer our clients," said Nossaman Managing Partner Michael Heumann.  "The Firm was very successful in identifying areas for growth in 2011—adding eight new partners in addition to a great group of associates—and this remains a priority for 2012."

The new associates are:

Bernadette Duran-Brown, Eminent Domain, Orange County.  Ms. Duran-Brown represents public agencies and property owners in eminent domain actions, including inverse condemnation actions, from the pre-pleading stage to resolution in state courts.  She joins the Firm from the California Eminent Domain Law Group and earned her law degree from USC Gould School of Law.  She also has a bachelor's degree from Seattle University.

Amber Maltbie, Public Policy, Sacramento.  Ms. Maltbie has experience advising corporations on nationwide lobbying, gift, and ethics compliance as well as compliance with the California Political Reform Act.  A graduate of McGeorge School of Law, she previously worked for Nielsen, Merksamer, Parrinello, Gross & Leoni LLP and the Fair Political Practices Commission.  Ms. Maltbie also spent time in Kosovo as a consultant for International Foundations for Electoral Systems.  She received her bachelor's degree from Mills College and attended the Center for Russian Language and Culture at Moscow State University.

John Smolen, Infrastructure, Washington, DC.  Mr. Smolen focuses on project finance transactions, energy, corporate matters, and real estate transactions.  He has experience in transactions involving the development and construction of diverse types of projects throughout the United States including drafting and negotiating engineering, procurement, and construction agreements; other and ancillary construction agreements; project development agreements; site leases; and other real property agreements.  Prior to earning his law degree at the University of Kansas School of Law, he served in the U.S. Navy as an officer, a naval aviator, flight instructor, and ROTC instructor at Virginia Tech University.  Mr. Smolen, who joins the Firm from Hogan Lovells US LLP, earned his bachelor of science degree from the United States Naval Academy and has a masters degree from Virginia Tech.
